Devkit Mode, Universal Windows Apps, Finally Coming to Xbox One This Summer

Microsoft will finally be realizing one of their oldest promises regarding the Xbox One console this summer- come the Windows 10 Anniversary update for the console, and each console will be able to turn into a devkit, allowing potentially all 20 million Xbox One owners to become indie game developers.

This will be achieved via a new app, DevMode, which will allow users to register themselves as Xbox one developers with Microsoft, and allow their consoles to switch over into devkit mode at the press of a single button.

That’s not the only big update to the Xbox One that will be happening, either, as Microsoft have also confirmed that Universal Windows Apps, as well as a unified store across all devices running Windows, will finally be coming this Summer too- meaning the Xbox One gets access to, and the advantage of, the new Windows development paradigm.

So yeah, it sounds like Microsoft will finally be delivering on some of their oldest promises- and all of us will benefit in the process.

Forza Motorsport 6: Apex New Trailer Shows off Pretty PC Graphics

Forza Motorsport 6: Apex is coming to Windows 10 this Spring, and now the game has gotten itself a brand new trailer. This video shows just how pretty the game can be when it’s using the right kind of technology to render its look and feel. The point of the video is to show off ““proof point of what a first party developer can do with UWP [Universal Windows Platforms] and DirextX 12.”

The new trailer was front and center of Microsoft’s Build 2016 developer conference in San Francisco. The video was used to introduced the gaming portion of Phil Spencer’s presentation at the conference. There has been quite a bit of angst over the plans that Microsoft has when it comes to the UWP. Some are even worried it might make it so that the Xbox One will basically be an outdated and unneeded video game console.

However Microsoft certainly doesn’t think the Xbox One is obsolete yet and the company wants to make sure people want to play both on the Xbox One and Windows 10. You can check out the video below of Forza Motorsport 6: Apex and get a bit of a peak at the very pretty racing game.

Destiny April Update: Chroma, Infusion Improvements, Sterling Treasures and More

Bungie hosted another livestream for Destiny‘s upcoming April Update, this time focusing on the gear players can acquire and some new features like Chroma. First things first, it was confirmed that there’s no Taken shader. Instead, the armour showcased is called Desolate Armour which can be acquired from Sterling Treasures. Collecting an entire set of Desolate Armour will grant you the Taken Jitter emote automatically.

About Sterling Treasures: These will be your new loot drops in the April Update and feature on guaranteed item and some other random goodies. The guaranteed items include one piece of Desolate and Spektar Armour while the possible rewards include boosters for Crucible and House of Judgment, Chroma, a Taken ship, class items for the new armour and more. Sterling Treasures can be obtained by completing the level 41 Prison of Elders, finishing a match in the Weekly Crucible Playlist and after each weekly reset.

If you want to try your hand at obtaining the entire set of Desolate or Spektar armour immediately, you can try buying Sterling Treasures from Eververse for real money. All of these pieces drop at 3 defense though so you’ll still need to actually play the game to obtain a good Light level.

Other new features include the ability to completely remove one’s HUD; Chroma which adds yellow, white, blue and red highlights to weapons and armour (with the Spektar Armour being specially designed for the same); Infusion now bringing the receiving weapon up to the exact Light level as the infused item; new Sparrows and a new Taken Ghost from the Challenge of the Elders; and a bunch of returning Year One items.

Those returning Year One items include weapons like Shadow Price, LDR 5001, Lord High Fixer, The Devil You Know, etc. Returning Year One Exotics include Queenbreaker’s Bow, Eternal Warrior, Lord of Wolves, Universal Remote and much more. There will also be new weapons themed around the Queen of the Reef, and a Taken shotgun and sword that can be acquired from the new Taken version of the Winter’s Run strike. You can check out the full list of returning weapons and other details here.

The April Update is due on April 12th and one more livestream is planned for detailing changes to the Crucible and sandbox. Thoughts on the new gear? Let us know below.

Call of Duty 2016 More Details Revealed: Space Combat, Central Hub, and More

We’ve already started to get some details on this year’s Call of Duty game- apparently, it’s one set in the far future, and features a heavily science fiction story with warring factions in space. However, today, we understood exactly what that might entail, thanks to more insider leaks from NeoGAF– apparently, Call of Duty 2016 will substantially switch things up again.

Name: cod6.jpg
Views: 1
Size: 24.8 KB
ID: 4240

How? Well, apparently the game will be set in space, and will feature high octane space combat, including space dogfights. The game will be set around Earth, but it will reach other locations, too. There will also be a central hub in the form of a space station.

The modern first person shooter, down to the setting most favored in the genre, owes itself entirely to Infinity Ward, and their 2007 breakout hit, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Call of Duty 2016 sounds exciting to me, and it could create a similar paradigm shift, too- the question is, can Infinity Ward, who’ve had two consecutive stinkers with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty: Ghosts, pull it off properly?

It remains to be seen. Hopefully we get to see Call of Duty 2016 some time soon.

There will also be options for colour-blind players, allowing them to choose their team colour and the opposing team’s colour. “This colorization is applied to enemy color, health bars, competitive objectives, etc., and is available on all platforms.” This will allow you to easily distinguish between items and enemies.

PlayStation Plus Lineup in April is Disappointing, Headed By Zombi and I Am Alive

Microsoft are offering some incredible games in what might be the single best month that the Games with Gold service has had yet. PS Plus, by contrast, has had some pretty disappointing months for a while now, and fans were undoubtedly hoping that Sony would bring their A-game to counter Microsoft’s efforts.

That… has not happened. Instead, the lineup of games that we are receiving as part of PS Plus this month is disappointing, looking extremely limp and terrible next to Microsoft’s offerings, but standing, on its own, as the worst month PS Plus has had in a long time- and PS Plus subscribers will attest that is actually impressive, considering how bad PS Plus has been of late.

The games being offered this month are:
  • Dead Star (PS4)
  • Zombi (PS4)
  • I Am Alive (PS3)
  • Savage Moon (PS3)
  • A Virus Named Tom (PS Vita)
  • Shutshimi (PS Vita)
How many of you will be bothering downloading any of these?

Xbox One To Receive Cortana And Ability To Play Background Music

During the on going Live Build 2016 conference, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer revealed a number of changes and features that are coming to the Xbox One and Windows 10 in the near future. Spencer revealed that they will be adding a single unified store across all devices thereby “giving developers new features and consumers new experiences”. This update will be a part of Windows 10 Anniversary Update which will go live later this year. Spencer did not revealed more details about this unified store but did stated that it will support the usual bundles, season passes and more.

He also revealed that the Xbox One will be receiving Cortana in the future, “who will be the player’s personal assistant”. Cortana will help players with game recommendations, challenges along with providing them with tips and tricks. New features such as background music are also coming with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Spencer revealed that Microsoft will be showing off more new Windows 10 Anniversary Update features at E3, both for Windows 10 and Xbox One.

Furthermore, UWP will be receiving updates too. Players will be able to disable v-sync and adding the ability for G-sync and FreeSync in May along with support for modding and overlays.. Microsoft also demonstrated Age of Empires II HD and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as modern desktop applications although this is an on going research at this point. (Update: This is actually a converter which converts a package from a platform such as Steam into a modern desktop application whilst taking advantage of Windows 10 features such as notifications.)

It looks like Microsoft is listening to its fans and it will be interesting to see what new features Xbox One and Windows 10 will receive in the future.

Street Fighter 5 Gets New Trailer, Showing Alex Off In Action

Street Fighter 5 received a brand new character today- Alex was added to the game’s roster as part of a free update, adding to the core game’s paltry roster. To demonstrate the addition of this new character, Capcom released a brand new character trailer today.

The trailer naturally focuses on Alex, showing off his moves and his character style. Alex seems to specifically hate Ken a fair bit, because he really wails on him a lot in the video. On the other hand, people who hate Ken are probably going to like Alex instantly just because of that.

Street Fighter 5 is available exclusively on the PlayStation 4 and PC. The game released in February, and had a troubled launch, though that mostly focused on the amount of content the game had, as well as the marketing and content distribution policies Capcom was implementing. The game has since then managed to rally, in large part because of its excellent core fighting loop.

Shadow of the Beast Launches on May 17

“We’ve finally reached the point where we have to stop putting things into the game – the last tweaks to combat have been made and the final Easter eggs are hidden for you to find,” explained Matt Birch, CEO and founder, Heavy Spectrum. “So now we are focused solely on fixing bugs and getting Shadow of the Beast ready to appear on PlayStation Store.”

The long development cycle for the game has been put to good use, as apparently, the game now runs at a steady 60 frames per second.
“Our small team has been using the extra time to the fullest – we’ve been able to push the game to a solid 60fps throughout, something we feel passionate about as fans of the fighting genre,” said Birch. “With the increased response time that comes with this we’ve been fine tuning the combat experience even more; upgrading Aarbron to the full extent of his abilities and equipping him with some of the mystic artifacts that you find will really add much more depth to the gameplay. It feels quite different to other combat-adventure games, but hopefully people will find it very rewarding!”

Shadow of the Beast will be available in May, exclusively on the PS4. Check out a new trailer for the game below.

Twitch App Now Available on PS4 in UK

It’s been a while coming, but the Twitch app on PlayStation 4 is now finally available in the UK too. The app originally launched in North America five months ago. It is unclear what caused the delay, but hey, it’s here now, and there’s nothing to complain about. Well, except for the fact that it took five months for it to come over to the UK in the first place!

The app is actually really well made- it’s feature rich, and it allows users to finally view all Twitch streams on their PS4, as opposed to just ones being made from other PS4 consoles. It’s well designed and well laid out, too- you should enjoy using it.

You can download it on the UK store starting now. It’s a really small download, it comes in at just over 56MB. So you won’t need to clean out the fridge either- just download it without worries, and enjoy.

Titanfall 2 Is Being Worked On By 90 People- Report

We already know that Titanfall 2 is a thing – the original game may not have been the kind of genre defining event that developers Respawn, publishers EA, or backers Microsoft wanted it to be, but it still was rather successful, successful enough that EA considers it to be a tentpole IP – but today, we got some more details on the game’s development.

According to Kristin Christopher, who is Respawn’s HR and recruitment manager, Respawn has more people working on Titanfall 2 than it did on the original game.

“We had about 70 developers on the original Titanfall and we currently have about 90 working on the sequel. We expect our new team to grow to a similar size,” Christopher said, before adding that Respawn is looking on expanding its team size to become a two game studio.

Titanfall 2 is expected to be released by March of next year, on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Unravel’s First Level Now Available in New Trial

The trial lasts for roughly ten hours on Xbox One and PC though PS4 gamers can try it out for as long as they’d like. It’s not quite the equivalent of EA/Origin Access but this does give PS4 players a chance to see what they’re missing.

Unravel released in February this year to above average critical acclaim with many complimenting its visuals and story-telling while criticizing the pacing and overall length relative to the plot. Nonetheless, it’s a unique platformer that’s worth looking into especially if you want a more unorthodox title to fill your release calendar.

Dark Souls 3 Review: UK Magazine Edge Awards It A 9/10

Dark Souls 3 is almost here, and its review embargo is almost up- that means we are going to start seeing what critics think about Miyazaki’s newest masterpiece very soon. Are they on board with the new game fully? Or does the fact that it is the fourth release of its ilk in three years lead to some kind of franchise fatigue?

If the first review for the game from a western outlet is to be believed, the magic of Dark Souls is strong as ever with Dark Souls 3. UK Magazine EDGE have reviewed the game, and scored it a 9/10, noting that the game has the best boss fight in the series, as well as some of the best locales, but also acknowledging that it is a bit too familiar, and that it is not as nuanced or complex as previous entries in the series have been.

The cons definitely worry me, but hopefully, they’re not as emphasized in the actual game. Dark Souls 3 is launching on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

EA Sports UFC 2: PS4 vs Xbox One Graphics Comparison, Attention To Detail

It only seems yesterday when EA showed off that wildly popular trailer of Fight Night Round 3 at E3 2005. It was essentially our first look at how game animations will look like in the future. Fighters would react realistically to their opponent’s punches; their faces will change dramatically whenever a punch connected and so on.

Name: EA-Sports-UFC-2-cover.jpg
Views: 1
Size: 21.6 KB
ID: 4228

After Fight Night Round, EA started taking interest in the UFC franchise and released EA Sports UFC on the PS4 and Xbox One back in 2014. It was somewhat of a mix bag but graphically it was a pleasant game to look at; and we are pleased to report that EA Canada has upped the ante with the sequel. Graphically speaking, EA Sports UFC 2 is an odd game to analyze. It doesn’t feature flashy visuals and it by no means is a system pusher since it only takes place in an octagon shaped stage. But what is there is truly special and it’s the attention to detail that really sets it apart from other fighters out there. Let me just get something out of the way, EA Sports UFC 2 is by far the most realistic looking fighting game we have ever played and we mean that not only in terms of visual aesthetics but the way each fighter has been animated.

Before we jump into what makes the game a visual stunner, it must be noted that the title is running on the Ignite Engine, an impressive framework of game development tools that has powered many of EA Sports’ games in the past. The engine has been improved in the last few years and its latest build integrates a full physical based rendering pipeline along with better lighting rendering and physics toolsets. The Ignite engine is compromised of several sub-frameworks which pertain to different sections of the game. One of the modules that is utilized by EA Sports UFC 2 is Human Intelligence which allows the AI opponent to make smart decisions based on how the player is performing. This enables the AI to take quicker judgment calls resulting into a realistic fighting experience. Secondly, the True Player Motion framework allows for various parts of the character’s body such as limbs, legs and even the clothes to simulate in a realistic manner.

So coming back to what we briefly mentioned before, the game is a unique fighter due to its attention to intricate details. The characters exhibit real world properties such as sweat being thrown off when they land a hard punch or the waves in their hair as they jump around or move around quickly. And did we mention how cool the blood effects are? During intense fights, character faces will have blood pouring from their forehead, nose and cheek; and during this moment if you are able to land a punch or two on the face, blood will fall and start spreading on the octagonal stage.

Furthermore, the character’s body and facial animations are a sight to behold at times. Usually most fighting games don’t have any issues in rendering the correct animations when the player lands a punch or a kick but in this title the developers have also added the correct facial and body animations for missed shots. Furthermore, whenever you land a shot, the muscle area of the impacted body will undergo a temporary displacement effect. This is a very subtle effect but you can clearly observe it in the slow motion replay.

Performance is pretty much identical. Both versions are capped at 30 frames per second and the game manages to keep it locked at almost all times with minimal drops. Now some may question the lack of 60fps in a fighting game but unlike other games in the genre such as Tekken, UFC isn’t a fast paced fighting game. Of course, we have always maintained that 60fps is a game changer but the 30fps doesn’t really hurt the experience here.

We also wanted to briefly talk about the AA solution the game integrates. EA Sports UFC 2 utilizes 4 X MSAA which helps the image quality to really stand out. We have mentioned the importance of MSAA in many of our previous analysis and how it helps reduce jaggies drastically. We witnessed next to no jaggies during gameplay as well as during the game’s cutscenes. Kudos to the developers for utilizing a resource intensive solution instead of using something simpler such as an FXAA solution. Other post processing effects such as the skin shaders, lighting tech, cinematic motion blur and depth of field are identical across both versions.

Other add on effects such as complex skin shaders, shadow quality, depth of field and others remain consistently similar across both platforms. In the end, EA Sports UFC 2 is a technically amazing fighter. The developer’s focus on attention to detail makes it a must play game. Now, only if there was a PC version to drool at as well.

Shadow of Mordor 2 Announcement May Be Incoming at E3 This Year- Rumor

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor was one of the big surprises of 2014, a game on the Lord of the Rings license that didn’t suck, and also managed to enthrall the player with a vision of Middle Earth uniquely suited to video games. It has been almost two years since it launched, though, and in this industry, no successful product usually goes that long without a follow-up.

And a follow-up is exactly what we might be getting. NerdLeaks reports that the sequel to the original game may be announced soon- as early as E3 this year. On famous stunt Lauren Mary Kim‘s credits page, they found listed among her work Shadow of Mordor 2, indicating that the game is in development, and that Kim worked on it. Kim has worked on numerous video games before, including Assassin’s Creed Unity, and Warner Bros.’ own Batman: Arkham Knight, so that part of the story checks out.

Apparently, she worked on stunts and acting for the game with Blur, which is one of the most prestigious CGI firms in the business- which implies either that Shadow of Mordor has a lot of CG, or that, equally likely, it will be getting a lot of CG trailers.

Whatever it is, we can probably expect an announcement soon- maybe even at E3 this year.

Quantum Break Gets Brand New Trailer, Watch It Inside

The next Remedy game, the long awaited time bending action game Quantum Break, is almost here – it launches on April 4 – and ahead of the launch, we have yet another trailer to now watch. The trailer, as always shows us some gameplay footage, but this new one also seems to take the time to set up some of the game’s incredibly heavy, philosophically ponderous plot line about time travel.

Quantum Break deals with the questions of causality, as well as those of convergence of events in timelines- if you have played the acclaimed visual novel Steins;Gate, you will recognize some of the things being said here. It sounds like Quantum Break believes that no matter what you do, even time travel cannot help you change your fate.

Heavy stuff.

Quantum Break launches on the Xbox One and Windows 10 on April 4. You can check out the new trailer for the game below.

The only DLC available for Black Ops 3 is Awakening which comes with four new maps and the first part of Der Eisendreche, a new Zombies campaign. This map pack is already available for Xbox One, PC and PS4 and has recently been announced for an April 5th release on PlayStation 3. What could the second DLC hold aside from, well, the second part of the Zombies campaign and four more maps? Expect to see another remake of a classic Call of Duty map, much like Skyjacked in Awakening, and a one month exclusivity period on the PS4.

Destiny Weekly Reset: The Undying Mind Arc Burn, Oryx Challenge

The weekly reset has come and gone for Bungie’s Destiny and since it isn’t April, that means more of the same nonsense for another two weeks. This week’s Nightfall is The Undying Mind which has the modifiers Arc Burn, Small Arms, Juggler and Exposure. When combining Arc Burn and Small Arms, guns like the Zhalo Supercell shine thanks to the increased damage (it’s also the only elemental primary weapon in Year Two so hopefully you have one).

Juggler will limit ammo drops for your equipped weapon while Exposure increases shield capacity but with a heavily decreased recharge rate.

The Challenge Mode for this week in King’s Fall is Oryx, which means detonating at least 16 Corrupted Orbs of Light at once. If you mess up a phase, then don’t worry – simply add another phase on top of that. Two Titans with Touch of Malice and Weapons/Blessing of Light in the middle will make quick work of the Ogres.

Check out the other activities and bounties for this week here.

Fallout 4 Far Harbor DLC Bigger Than Oblivion’s Shivering Islands

Bethesda’s Fallout 4 had Automatron release recently and while anyone’s view of “justified” of a purchase it was will differ, there was some pretty cool content and new features added. For hardcore Fallout 4 players who want more though, Far Harbor may be of greater interest.

Releasing in May, Far Harbor will add a brand new region with a new story, side-quests and much more. How big will it really be though? According to Pete Hines, Bethesda VR of marketing and PR, on Twitter it’s actually bigger than the Shivering Isles expansion for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. “It’s bigger in size than Shivering Isles. I asked.”

Far Harbor will retail for $25 when it releases in May. Another add-on is coming with the Wasteland Workshop which allows players to have their battles between monsters. And if that’s not enough, the official modding tools will be out next month as well. Survival Mode has also recently entered Steam beta so that’s on the cards for the future.

Fallout 4 Survival Mode Details Revealed: Saving, No Fast Travel, Adrenaline and More

Bethesda Softworks has shared new details on Fallout 4‘s Survival Mode which is now available via Steam Beta. PC users can opt in to the beta if they so choose. Survival Mode changes up several things about the game. All traditional forms of saving are disabled and you can only save by going to sleep for an hour minimum. Fast Travel is also disabled and enemies will deal more damage than before. There are means to fight back thanks to the new Adrenaline perk which stacks by 5 percent for every five kills with a maximum of 50 percent damage possible.

Sleeping tends to remove Adrenaline ranks though and you’ll have to manage a variety of other issues like hunger, thirst, immunodeficiency from using RadAway, etc. Even items like MedPacks and bullets now have weight, forcing you to manage your inventory more carefully.

Check out all the other details in the blog post. No word yet on when Survival Mode will officially head to consoles but stay tuned for more updates.
